Statement of Teaching Philosophy
As an educator, I believe that each student comes to the classroom with unique backgrounds and experiences that should be acknowledged and celebrated. My teaching philosophy centers on creating an inclusive and dynamic learning environment where students can relate course material to their own lives. By actively engaging students and fostering a sense of community, I aim to make learning relevant, engaging, and empowering.
I believe that students learn best when they can see the connections between the material and their personal experiences. To facilitate this, I encourage students to reflect on how course content applies to their own lives and to express their perspectives. This approach allows students to take ownership of their learning while also deepening their understanding. I often incorporate interactive activities, such as discussion posts and scavenger hunts in my research classes, to promote critical thinking and collaboration. These activities foster a sense of curiosity and encourage students to explore topics in depth.
Assessment is an integral part of the learning process, and I use quizzes and annotated bibliographies to measure both understanding and growth. I believe that assessments should not only serve as a means of evaluating student performance but also as opportunities for reflection and learning. I prioritize providing timely, constructive feedback to guide students’ development and offer support when needed.
One of my key priorities is ensuring that students feel supported and encouraged throughout the course. I am highly accessible, providing my phone number for text or calls and ensuring students know they can reach out at any time. I make it a point to monitor online discussions closely, fostering an environment of respect and proper online etiquette. When students fall behind or are not participating, I proactively reach out to offer assistance and find ways to better support their learning.
In conclusion, my teaching philosophy revolves around creating a supportive, interactive, and inclusive learning environment where students are encouraged to engage, reflect, and grow. I am committed to being a responsive and approachable educator who is dedicated to fostering student success both inside and outside the classroom.
